Miss Manners’ Perfect Children Will Co-Byline Syndicated Column

Son Nicolas and daughter Jacobina will add to the column’s legacy of etiquette in society.

Miss Manners’ two perfect children will join her as co-authors of her widely syndicated newspaper column beginning the week of September 15, 2013, John Glynn, president of Universal UClick announced today.

Each of Miss Manners’ (Judith Martin’s) children has co-authored an etiquette book with her and now will continue to help her rescue civilization as contributors to the thrice-weekly column, which began in 1978.

“Although they have demanding careers of their own and small children at home, they graciously agreed to assist their mother,” Mrs. Martin said. “They must have been very well brought up.”

“Miss Manners’ classic column was responsible for re-introducing etiquette when Americans were facing the consequences of letting it all hang out,” Glynn said. “Although she has everyone talking about manners, Miss Manners insists that everyone must also practice it if we are to have the less abrasive society that everyone wants. Universal Uclick is tremendously excited that Mrs. Martin has recruited the next Manners generation in this noble endeavor. While etiquette bridges all social classes and all generations, etiquette needs constantly to be applied to our evolving society, and these two new voices will expand the reach of Miss Manners’ wisdom.”

Nicholas Ivor Martin, co-author of Miss Manners Minds Your Business, to be published September 24 by W.W. Norton & Co., Inc., is also the author of The Opera Manual (Scarecrow Press 2013). He is the Director of Operations and Special Initiatives at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and a frequent lecturer. A graduate of Harvard College, Nicholas previously worked as a policy analyst at The White House and as publisher of The Washington Monthly. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Rebecca Toon, who teaches at The Old Town School of Folk Music, and their perfect daughter, August, age 2.

Jacobina Martin, co-author of Miss Manners’ Guide to a Surprisingly Dignified Wedding (W.W. Norton & Co.), teaches improv and sketch comedy at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Jacobina is a graduate of Harvard College and received a master’s degree from The Actors’ Studio at The New School in New York. An actress, director, and writer, she has worked in professional theater from the age of 12. She lives in Chicago with her husband Ronald Kroll, a special education teacher, and their perfect daughter Greta, age 3.

Judith Martin received the President’s National Humanities Medal at The White House in 2005. She has been a regular contributor to The Today Show and has made scores of national TV appearances ranging from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson to The Colbert Report (as a special guest correspondent) and recent recurring appearances on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown (discussing football etiquette). A selection of Mrs. Martin’s columns was collected and set to music by composer Dominick Argento in his song cycle Miss Manners on Music. Mrs. Martin also contributes a weekly column to the Microsoft Network and, since its launch in 2008, has been a contributor to wowOwow, a website for women to talk culture, politics, and gossip. Her portrait by Victor Edelstein hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Judith Martin has written 15 etiquette books including the national bestsellers Miss Manners’ Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior and Miss Manners’ Guide to Rearing Perfect Children, two novels, Gilbert and Style and Substance, and two non-fiction books The Name on the White House Floor and No Vulgar Hotel: The Desire and Pursuit of Venice. She lives in Washington D.C. with her husband, Dr. Robert Martin, a research scientist at the National Institutes of Health.
