Universal Uclick Well Represented in the 2013 National Cartoonist Society Reuben Awards Nominees
Kansas City, Mo. (April 1, 2014) – The divisional nominees for the 2013 National Cartoonist Society Reuben Awards, recognizing the year’s outstanding achievements in the cartooning industry, have been announced, with Universal Uclick and GoComics creators receiving several acknowledgements. Three out of four nominees for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year” are Universal Uclick syndicated creators: Wiley Miller of Non Sequitur, Stephan Pastis of Pearls Before Swine and Mark Tatulli of Heart of the City and Lio.
Miller’s
Non Sequitur provides a wry look at
the absurdities in everyday life. Creative and clever, it tackles current
cultural issues, including politics, celebrities and relationships. Pastis
tells the tale of two friends in Pearls
Before Swine. Together, Rat and Pig offer caustic commentary on humanity’s
quest for the unattainable.
In
Heart of the City, Tatulli details
the antics of the precocious and endearing character Heart. Growing up in
Philadelphia with her single mother, Heart tackles endless challenges such as
butting heads with her nanny and planning her future wedding.
Tatulli
also received a nomination for the “Newspaper Comic Strip” category for his comic
strip Lio, which follows the
extraordinary imagination of an uncommon first-grader, leading to bizarre,
creepy and fun adventures. Tatulli renders this pantomime strip in pen-and-ink
style, giving the artwork a dark, spidery feel to match the strip’s dark humor.
“I’m
incredibly surprised and humbled to be nominated in both the NCS Comic Strip
category and Cartoonist of the Year,” Tatulli said. “I’m especially honored to
be nominated along with so many cartoonists I personally admire!”
Miller,
Pastis and Tatulli have all been recognized by the National Cartoonist Society
in past years. Each has been the recipient of the “Newspaper Comic Strip”
Award: Miller in 1992, Pastis in 2003 and 2006 and Tatulli in 2008. Pastis has
been nominated for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year” six times.
Additionally,
two Universal Uclick syndicated creators are category nominees for “Newspaper
Panels”: Scott Hilburn of The Argyle
Sweater and Mark Parisi of Off the
Mark.
Hilburn’s
creation presents his sharply unique take on history, everyday life and the
truly absurd, providing a surreal and hilarious look at the world. Parisi’s Off the Mark puts a refreshing spin on
everything from your favorite icon to your least favorite trend. Slightly
skewed and a little twisted, the comic panel scores a bull’s-eye with readers
looking for a laugh.
Parisi
is also a category nominee for “Greeting Cards,” as is Glenn McCoy, editorial
cartoonist, cartoonist of The Duplex
and co-cartoonist of The Flying McCoys.
“I
am very honored, humbled, happy and a lot of other things that may or may not
begin with ‘h’!” Parisi said of his nominations.
Dave
Whamond, creator of Reality Check, is
a category nominee for both “Newspaper Illustration” and “Magazine
Illustration.”
Matt
Davies, whose editorial cartoons are syndicated by Universal Uclick, is a category
nominee for “Book Illustration” in regards to Ben Rides On, a children’s book published by Neal Porter/Roaring
Brook.
Five
creators who contribute to Universal Uclick’s GoComics website and mobile app also
received nominations. Clay Bennett and Mike Ramirez are both nominees for the “Editorial
Cartoons” category. Rich Powell of Wide
Open is a nominee for “Advertising/Product Illustration.” Buni creator Ryan Pagelow received a
category nomination for “Online-Short Form.” Dave Coverly of Speed Bump is a category nominee for
“Newspaper Panels.”
The
2013 Reuben Awards will be presented at the annual NCS Reuben Awards dinner on
